“We have a fantastic relationship with SeaChange who provide all of our Health and Safety services, and when they introduced us to their CAYGO© Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention System, we jumped at the opportunity to implement this system as we knew it would support our staff in identifying and addressing STF hazards and improving housekeeping standards across the board”.

Junction 14 Mayfield Forecourt Retail
Junction 14 Mayfield implements Innovative SeaChange Technology to Prevent and Manage Slip, Trip & Fall Accidents in their Workplace

Client Profile
Junction 14 Mayfield is one of the busiest forecourt retail sites in Ireland. It was conceived by two local businessmen and brothers, Liam and Donal Fitzpatrick, who identified Junction 14 Mayfield as the perfect place to give M7 motorists a break on the journey between Dublin, Cork and the South West. They spent several years researching the European Motorway Forecourt Industry, with a view to bringing the latest trends and technologies to the Irish market to help improve the existing motorway service station offerings. With a workforce of over 200 people, Junction 14 is one of the largest and most innovative Forecourt Retail sites in Ireland.
The Challenge
Within the retail sector, slip, trip and fall incidents can cause up to 65% of liability claims, and a large proportion of that alarming figure is due to poor housekeeping and a distinct lack of proactive slip, trip and fall risk management practices.

Part of the best-in-class customer experience that Junction 14 Mayfield champions involves ensuring that the business is a ‘safe place to shop’, and General Manager Gavin Moran takes this very seriously. Housekeeping standards are paramount to Gavin and his team, and given the extremely high footfall they experience every day, their staff must be on the ball when it comes to ensuring the site is hazard free.
An ongoing challenge for any high footfall business is to ensure good housekeeping habits are formed. It is important that all staff are connected to slip, trip and fall hazard identification and removal to ensure their retail business is a ‘safe place to shop’. Gavin knew that to manage the prevalent risk of slip, trip and fall, as well as rising insurance costs in his business, he needed to find an innovative digital solution that helped to create safe habits and behaviours within Junction 14 Mayfield’s large workforce.
The Solution
Junction 14 Mayfield partnered with SeaChange to improve the group’s safety culture, reduce the likelihood of slip, trip and fall accidents and claims, and consequently help to manage rising insurance costs. SeaChange implemented its Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention System to address this key concern at Junction 14 Mayfield.

Junction 14 Mayfield was first zoned into seven areas and provided handheld devices per zone. Site management then received champion training to run the CAYGO© Slip Trip and Fall Prevention System on a daily basis. This system works on a user-friendly application that enables the workforce to schedule customised CAYGO check intervals to routinely mitigate the risk of slip, trip and fall across the site. The system uses automated scheduling to maintain consistency throughout the day while ensuring that no scheduled CAYGO checks are missed. All staff are engaged in the process, which only takes 30 seconds per CAYGO check, and NFC tagging qualifies location, ensuring that the Staff Checker was physically present.
The SeaChange client portal enabled Junction 14 Mayfield to trend frequent slip, trip and fall hazards, track their progress, log the hazards addressed on a daily basis, and regularly report on system compliance. The CAYGO© Slip Trip and Fall Prevention System ultimately created better housekeeping habits and behaviours across Junction 14 Mayfield, which reduced the risk of slip, trip and fall incidents for both staff and customers.

The Result
Junction 14 Mayfield has moved from a very good starting point to an even more sustainable position by investing in safety and targeting the main risk factor (i.e. slip, trip and fall) in high footfall sectors, through the SeaChange Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention System. Junction 14 Mayfield is always focused on continuous improvement from an operations perspective and adopts innovative solutions that lead to real change. Slip, trip and fall management is a daily undertaking and always evolving, but Junction 14 Mayfield is leading the health and safety way in the petrol forecourt retail space while reaping the rewards in terms of increased staff awareness, increased housekeeping standards, reduced accidents, and managed insurance premium rates.
