The Irish Prison Service Connect Risk Awareness to People in a Clear and Visual Way

The Irish Prison Service (IPS) manages 14 prisons, with the objective of providing safe and secure custody, dignity of care, and rehabilitating prisoners.
The Challenge
The safety of prisoners and staff is a cornerstone of the Service’s policy. As part of the IPS ethos of caring for and rehabilitating prisoners, prisoners work in workshops. In order to raise safety awareness, the Irish Prison Service wanted a system that made safety visible, real and easy to understand.
The Solution
The Irish Prison Service approached SeaChange to develop a Risk Awareness System that would engage people, raise safety awareness, and effectively communicate best practice safety standards in their workshops.
SeaChange provided each workshop with its Risk Awareness System. This system provided bespoke Job Safety Awareness (JSA©) Visuals that were specifically designed for the IPS’ wood and metal workshops. As part of the Risk Awareness System design, each JSA Visual was presented on a Safety Centre of Excellence Display to highlight risky machinery and procedures and to visually demonstrate the consequences of poor practices resulting in specific accidents and injuries.
With the Risk Awareness System in place per workshop, safety procedures and localised risk are now clearly visible and easy to understand. The IPS says the Risk Awareness System and JSA Visuals are ideal for training on localised hazards and risks in each workshop.
The Result
Following the implementation of the SeaChange Risk Awareness System in all IPS workshops, there has been a reduction in accidents and incidents, as well as an increased understanding of local risk and best practices. Safety awareness among staff and prisoners has improved significantly and the number of claims has been reduced, proving the system to be self-financing.
