“Since partnering with SeaChange over 5 years ago, we have seen significant reductions in the frequency of slip, trip and fall claims occurring in our centre, and that is because we are managing this risk proactively on a daily basis. In 2017 our centre recorded 66 accidents and incidents – but since implementing the SeaChange systems we have dramatically reduced this number year on year. In 2021, our centre recorded 11 accidents and incidents. The benefits are clear and they include less accidents, fewer claims, and lower insurance premiums.”

Client Profile
Athlone Towncentre is the largest shopping centre in the Midlands. The 185,000 square foot centre, which is visited by thousands of shoppers each year, is home to over 60 top retail brands.

The Challenge
For Athlone Towncentre, health and safety is a core management responsibility and pillar of their business. As Liam Coady, centre director, puts it, “We make it a point to advise, educate, and make the case for health and safety and fire safety and to ensure that all retailers are compliant with the Centre’s health and safety and fire safety rules”.
Liam Coady wanted to improve the shopping centre’s safety standards and grow their overall safety culture to reduce the risk of injury for his workforce, the centre’s retailers, and the centre’s large customer base. He and his team were particularly concerned with improving internal safety leadership while focusing on managing key risks, including slip, trip and fall, within the centre. To support the centre’s ambition to grow its safety compliance and safety culture, Liam went to market in search of a Health and Safety partner.
The Solution
In 2016, Athlone Towncentre chose SeaChange – a health and safety consultancy specialising in safety culture partnerships and behaviour-based risk management systems – as its health and safety partner.

After identifying what the client required, SeaChange provided the Athlone Towncentre with their Safety Culture Pro Partnership. The large shopping centre received an initial risk assessment, compliance provisions (i.e. safety statement), a visual risk awareness system and site champion leadership training. In addition, Athlone Towncentre adopted the SeaChange Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention System to manage a key risk in the centre, given the daily high footfall.
An onsite SeaChange Champion was trained and certified on the key safety routines to maintain a positive safety culture onsite and, along with Liam and the senior management team, given access to the SeaChange client portal to track proactive safety KPIs. The site is audited annually through the SeaChange Safety Culture (SABRE©) audit, allowing SeaChange to benchmark safety culture performance across the centre. SeaChange’s highly visual system targeted housekeeping habits and significantly improved safety culture as, according to Liam Coady, it ‘changed the way we think’.
“The SeaChange Partnership gave us the tools that changed our ways of thinking and working. The SeaChange Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention System has systemised their approach to managing this key risk and reducing the risk of injury onsite.”
