Safety Culture Transformation at Around Noon

Client Profile

Around Noon was established in 1989 at the Chambers family kitchen table, making sandwiches for local businesses in Newry, Northern Ireland.

30 years later, having expanded to four manufacturing sites including Slough, UK, they are still making sandwiches but have expanded their food-to-go range to include breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and bakery treats. Around Noon know how important their quality products are to their customers so collectively, as a team, they aim to drive standards with continuous improvement, product development and innovation.

The Challenge

Company CEO Gareth Chambers was concerned about the natural disconnect between paper-based safety policies and risk assessments sitting on his managers’ shelves, and the reality of what was happening on the factory floor across their four manufacturing sites.

His concern was recently underscored when Around Noon moved to a brand new manufacturing facility to cope with increased demand for their top-quality products. Due to this exponential growth, the organisation was concerned about being exposed when it came to safety management. They began their search for a safety consultant to help transform their safety culture and improve safety standards group-wide over the long term.

The Solution

Around Noon identified SeaChange as the right option for them after seeing the innovative and lean approach that SeaChange applied to the world of safety management.

The first phase in their engagement with SeaChange was to accurately identify the cultural and behavioural safety gaps that needed to be addressed. To identify the key areas of action, SeaChange conducted a Safety Gap Analysis where they assessed both compliance and behaviour across all four locations in the Around Noon business. Once this Safety Gap Analysis was complete, a group report was presented to the Around Noon senior leadership team. This report prioritised the key actions required to make immediate safety performance improvements and recommended a Phase-2 solution.

The second phase was the commencement of a SeaChange Safety Culture Pro Partnership across all sites within the business. This behaviour-based safety solution was aimed at improving compliance and connecting staff behaviours with the organisation’s safety standards.

Each site received a site-specific risk assessment, key safety compliance, a visual risk awareness system and safety leadership training to help lead safety culture across the group. The partnership also includes access to the SeaChange client portal to log proactive safety KPIs on a routine basis, report on safety performance, and improve defensibility in the event of an accident. Each site receives ongoing consultancy support by a SeaChange expert, and an annual SeaChange Safety Culture (SABRE©) Audit to benchmark performance and continuously improve safety management.

As part of this partnership, SeaChange provided each site with their Risk Awareness System. This system enabled each site to engage with their workforce and create visual safety standards, known as Job Safety Awareness (JSA©) visuals, for local areas of operation throughout the business.

These visual tools helped to animate risk, hazards and controls while also ensuring that the workforce were trained and refreshed in key safety standards. This system served to bring ‘safety to life’ in all areas of the business and connect safety standards with people.

The Result

Following the implementation of the SeaChange Safety Culture Pro Partnership, there was an immediate rise in employee awareness and engagement with the general safety messaging that Around Noon wanted to drive.

The visual, interactive and lean approach to safety management through the Risk Awareness System improved safety behaviours and reduced the number of near misses and incidents across the group.

The SeaChange Safety Culture Pro Partnership provided the following benefits for Around Noon:

  • Less ‘human error’ variation because it’s now clear what needs to be done

  • Sustainable engagement at operator level

  • Visual risk awareness tools that transcended language & understanding barriers

  • Greater training compliance across all levels of the organisation

  • Improved productivity and morale at operator and FLM level

  • Improved safety leadership across all sites

“The SeaChange Partnership introduced a lean management approach to safety for our manufacturing facilities and greatly helped to engage staff, connect best practice to the reality on the ground, and grow a sustainable safety culture over time. We are all about investing in our people here and endeavour to achieve the best in every area of our business”.
